Jessica Osborne, a waitress at Pizza Hut, has a dream to go college and pursue a career in photography. But with the lack of money, she can not do so.
But one Friday evening, her dream did come true. Her regular customer Becky, who orders the same pizza every Friday, gave Jessica a $10,000 tip to help pursue her college education. Becky had recently received a huge settlement from an accident that took the lives of her oldest daughter and husband. Becky gave Jessica a $10,000 tip to help pursue her career and thought it was the right thing to do.

I think that it shows how tipping can reflect a more personal interaction. This shows that the customer and waitress have had some personal conversations and know, at least somewhat, what is going on in each others lives---since the tip was given to her particularly to help pay for college. I think it also shows how we make money personal my earmarking it; in this case, earmarking it for someone else rather for yourself.
A $10,000 tip. I wonder if the company that she works for gets a share of her tip. I guess in this case, Simmel's argument that money is impersonal and hence allows us freedom doesn't really apply because by making her interactions with that customer more personal she was able to build some sort of relationship that allowed her to get a very generous tip. And most likely from now on when it comes to this customer, she will have less "freedom" to do whatever she wants because she'll most likely feel obligated to go out of her way to "serve" him and in a way "repay" him.
This is like the previous post where the man tipped the waitress a huge lump sum and gave her a car after she served him for 7 years. It really does show us that even though we live in a world where we go on about our lives doing things on our own, we are still social beings at the end of the day. No matter what, we all crave for interaction whether it be in a local coffeeshop or interacting with a waiter even though you probably won't see them again unless you are a regular customer
The fact that she received a $10,000 tip is amazing, but that customer must really have faith in the fact that the pizza hut waitress will make good with the money and have a positive impact on society if not for herself. Can that be written off?
One year earlier, Melina Salazar got five times as much as Jessica's. She got the tip from an elderly man from his last will and testament after he went Home to be with the Lord. Salazar got $50,000 and a Buick!
