Cambodian Tontines

This is the project space for Belinda Uy, Jenny Lien, and Tanya Kim!

The concept of tontine developed in France in the late 17th century, since
then it has evolved into other variations in other cultures. Our focus
will be the practice of Cambodian Tontine in Southern California. We will
also lightly discuss more contemporary forms of tontine.

Tontine Nation is a reality show that will probably air in the fall of 2008. The basic concept of the show ties back to our project. The link below is a fan website that will follow the show and is a meeting place for other fans of the show. We posted a comment on the discussion board and here are the responses thus far.

I was actually really interested in this topic because there is a similar thing that occurs within the hispanic community. My parents actually participated in a couple of those and they found it helpful at the time.

I thought the group presentation was very interesting, especially the part of how everyone trusts each other enough to be able to put stuff in a collective pot. I can believe that some people would just steal it, but I can't believe they would steal and be willing to change their life completely, but I suppose the ones that do this have very little to lose other than the social interactions.
