In this article, it seems as if the entire world is way to dependent on the US, which is fine for the US. In a way, by believing in this "money" that has value just placed on it because everyone believes in it could be applied to other things, if people believed in it, there is no reason why the topic of money in the form of service or other things like the ithaca money couldn't work.
Look at the Bear Sterns debacle. I was interviewing with them hoping to get a job earlier this year. Pretty glad it didn't work out now.
