Besides being very amusing, this article showed how for many, money in and of itself is not terribly important, but a means to a great end: fame. It's interesting how many of the names of 19C industrialists still resonate with us, but often disembodied from their 'business' context, and more connected with one instance of philanthropy or other, and I suppose this must have been one of the goals of Carnegie and others when they made these bequests.
OMG!!! I used to work with or should I say for Brad Feld, the guy who donated $25,000 for the plaque on the bathroom door. I worked for Mobius Venture Capital as an office boy for five years and Brad was one of the directors but he was based out of Colorado.
I have to say that the white marble Buddhist statues in Aldrich should be added to the list for anyone who has ever walked through the park at night and thought that they were real people. I suppose that this article demonstrates that value of good is subjective. Of course, PT Barnum thinks that elephants are useful creatures for a university because elephants are a major part of his life. To him, the elephant gift probably was worth more/was more useful than the money it cost to purchase the animal.
the piece on crick (dna) was astonishing, i can't believe that just because the school was going to introduce a church on the campus he was flipping out! to say that a church is equivalent to having a brothel is just outrageous in my opinion, crazy man but without him i don't know where we would be!
The donations given by the people were very interesting. I wonder if someone will donate a real anteater for our school. I find it somewhat uninspiring to read a quote from some guy everytime I go use the restroom but I guess that's his cup of tea. How much do elephants go for these days?
