As a group, our aim was to figure out whether or not money can buy love in person, or more recently, via the internet. We explored various avenues such as culturally general matchmaking services, culturally linked online dating services, general online matchmaking services, as well as mail-order brides. We found that money can buy love in some situations, but chemistry comes from within and not from a dating service. Click here to learn more about modern-day matchmaking.

Matchmaking, online, and with money as the intermediary. Who says money can't buy love? In this paper, the students found a highly segmented dating market, where race, class and ethnicity intersect with money and hopes for marriage in all kinds of expected and unexpected ways. The paper is also a critical commentary on the use of online services to find that perfect mate. What strikes me, however, is how similar the online services are to traditional matchmakers. One wonders what the algorithms are that are used by the online services, and whether a traditional matchmaker has implicit algorithms that are similar. It is interesting to me that Wikipedia has this to say, at the top of its entry on "Matchmakers": "This article is about human matchmakers. For modern matchmaking which tends to substitute information technology or game-like rules for the expert's finesse, see Dating system." A fascinating paper on an increasingly consequential topic.
